Wine is more than just a cultural asset – wine has matured into a lifestyle object. If you want to dance across the social floor unscathed, you need a minimum of basic knowledge. The only problem is that the subject of wine is extremely complex and confusing.

A jumble of truths, untruths and clichés!

In my opinion, the most important rule is that you should feel good when you enjoy wine. Wine only tastes really good when it is enjoyed with all the senses. And this only works if the drinker is relaxed and can let go.

Something concrete to enjoy wine in style

Anyone born before 1980 knows that the glass is held by the stem. There are good reasons for this, as the wine warms up far too quickly when the glass is held against the stomach. Furthermore, the glass looks horrible after a while. And it’s just ‘comme il faut’.

But I can’t help but wonder if it’s not more stylish to break the rule and hold the glass however you like, rather than always trying to hold it by the stem in style. I was recently asked whether it is allowed to hold a glass to your stomach when flirting. It took me a moment to understand the question. My answer was “yes”. This outraged quite a few people.

Style is an attitude! Audrey Hepburn already knew that.

The glass poses further challenges. There are people who own over 30 different glasses. I’m not talking about a lovingly assembled collection of 30 different flea market jars. No! 30 different shapes of glasses to match the different wines of the house, each in a pack of 6. If you have so much space in the Chuchichäschtli, why not?

Like the wine itself, the wine glass is a matter of taste. Whether you prefer fine crystal, want to have a huge selection, or – as in my case – the glasses should mainly be dishwasher-safe. There is the right glass for every style, every requirement and every budget.
